87,000 people protest against pension reform in Paris

87,000 people participated in a mass demonstration against the pension reform in the French capital on January 31, reported the prefecture of Paris police, the newspaper Le Parisien wrote.

The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) organized the demonstration. According to the confederation, more than 2.8 million people attended protests throughout the country. Large protests were held in Lyonne, Rennes, Rouen, Marseille, Nantes and Montpellier. The authorities have yet provided no numbers.

It should be noted that data on the number of participants in the previous rally, held on January 19, substantially differed. According to the police, 80,000 people took to the streets of Paris, the organizers said 400,000, and the independent monitoring center Occurence estimated the turnout at 55,000 people.

The march in Paris ended at Place Vauban, with clashes with police and the detonation of firecrackers. The police used tear gas and detained about 30 people. The information is being specified.

The French are protesting against pension reform. Unions are demanding that the intention to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 be abandoned. Separate groups oppose benefits for certain professions.

A new bill of pension reform in France came before the lower house of parliament in the country on January 30.
