Yevgeny Prigozhin, a businessman and founder of the Russian private military company Wagner, confirmed the complete liberation of the town of Soledar, the businessman’s press service wrote on his Telegram channel on January 11.
“Once again I would like to confirm the complete liberation and mopping up of Soledar territory from Ukrainian army units,” the press service quoted Prigozhin as saying.
According to the businessman, the Russian military eliminated about 500 Ukrainian militants who refused to surrender.
Prigozhin assured that all civilians were brought out of the city before the mopping-up.
Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Soledar was blocked by Russian airborne troops from the north and south, assault units were fighting in the city, and the Russian Air Force was striking Ukrainian entrenched lines. It was noted that the Russian Armed Forces had taken control of the village of Podgorodnoye near Soledar within a day.
At the same time, Prigozhin’s press service stated that it was his units that controlled Soledar and that “no units other than the fighters of the Wagner PMCs stormed the city.”
