Lavrov: Merkel’s words on Minsk agreements are the West’s consistent position

28.12.2022, Moscow.

The West actually declared on Russia after the 2014 coup d’etat in Ukraine, which was “orchestrated” by the United States, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview on Channel One‘s Big Game program on December 28.

At the same time, he noted that the words of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel that “the 2014 Minsk agreement was an attempt to give Ukraine time” were not, in his opinion, an attempt to catch up with the “train” of Russophobia, but were a consistent position.

He spoke about Merkel’s conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin a few years ago, during which she said that it was up to Moscow to resolve the problem of the special status of Donbass.

“So it’s not at all an epiphany and not at all a last-minute desire to keep up with the train that is gaining Russophobic momentum. It has deep roots,” Lavrov said.

According to him, war against Russia was declared quite a long time ago: it happened after the coup d’état in Ukraine, which the US helped to take place and which was supported by the European Union, as well as after the decision was made not to implement the Minsk agreements.
