The European Union needs “modern and compatible” armed forces, stated Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrel on December 12.
He also stressed that as a result of the EU’s continued military support to Ukraine, the EU’s own weapons stocks were rapidly depleted. The head of European diplomacy called it “the most obvious example of our shortcomings.”
In May 2022, Borrel had already stated the need to create a United European Armed Forces of Europe.
He then stated that there had been a “tectonic shift” in the “landscape” of European security because of Ukraine; therefore, the European Union must take responsibility for its own security.
