The head of the Foreign Ministry of Russia Sergey Lavrov emphasized the importance of the international conference “Partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the historical memory of the peoples of Belorussia and Russia” for the peoples of Russia and Belorussia, which will take place in Polotsk, as the press service of the Ministry reported on its website on September 19.

As noted in the message, “on September 22-23 this year, Belorussian friends together with the Russian Military Historical Society will hold another important event in Polotsk – an international scientific conference Partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the historical memory of the peoples of Belorussia and Russia.

According to the Minister, “such work, aimed at ensuring the continuity of our common history, to tell our citizens the truth about the centuries-old cultural, historical, spiritual, moral and kinship ties that unite the citizens of Russia and Belorussia, deserves respect and support.”

He reminded that the First Partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1772 was the day of reunification of Belorussia and Russia. “This epochal event predetermined not only the fate of our common homeland with Belorussia, but also the course of European history. Originally Orthodox lands, whose population had been subjected to artificial polonization for several centuries, returned to the Russian Empire,” Lavrov stressed.

He also noted that thanks to this event only “the Belorusian people managed to preserve their national identity and language and create conditions for the formation of their own statehood.”
