Ukrainian army's shelling of Zaporozhye NPP may cause a threat of an accident comparable to Chernobyl

05.08.2022, Moscow.

Ukraine’s armed units fired large-caliber artillery at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant to cause an emergency situation at the plant, deputy director of the Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry Igor Vishnevetsky said at a UN conference on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty on August 5.

“The situation is extremely alarming, fraught with a technogenic catastrophe at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. This catastrophe, if an accident happens there, will be comparable to that at Chernobyl,” Vishnevetsky said.

According to him, the Ukrainian shelling was aimed at the substation from which the plant’s infrastructure is powered. Damage to this substation is fraught with the risk of de-energizing the nuclear power plant and causing an accident. The Ukrainian military also shelled the town of Energodar, several kilometers from the NPP, where the plant’s personnel live.

“It is not yet known what the consequences of this shelling are, whether there are human casualties,” Vishnevetsky added.

He also reported that fires have started in the buildings that were shelled by Ukrainian armed units. Due to the continuing danger of artillery shelling, repair crews cannot arrive at the scene of the fire.

“We would like to appeal to international organizations, primarily the UN and the International Atomic Energy Agency, as well as countries that have influence over the Kiev regime, to take action so that the shelling of the nuclear plant stops immediately,” Vishnevetsky suggested.
