A majority of deputies will support the Mexican government in the dispute initiated by the USA and Canada over Mexican energy policy, chairman of the Mexican Senate Coordinating Council Ricardo Monreal said, El Universal reports on July 20.

He noted that the trade agreement between the USA, Mexico and Canada (T-MEC / USMCA) is the cornerstone of the North American region’s economic development, and in this document the parties have outlined common agreements on rights and obligations in different areas.

“And in the energy sector, in energy policy (…) – chapter eight of the T-MEC recognizes the direct, inalienable and immutable ownership of hydrocarbons by the Mexican state,” Monreal stressed.

He also stressed that the national policy of the state is not subject to discussion on the international level. According to him, it was for this very purpose that the eighth chapter of the treaty has been formulated, and no free interpretation of it is allowed.

At the same time, he noted that Mexico will not abandon the dialogue with the USA and US and Canadian investors on this issue.

The US authorities decided to initiate the first phase of the trade dispute in the trilateral trade agreement T-MEC due to dissatisfaction with the energy policy of Mexico in the electric power and oil industries.

Mexican leader Andrés Manuel López Obrador responded by saying that his country was not afraid of such claims and expressed doubt that they would have any consequences. He has long said that he intends to achieve the sovereignty of Mexico in the energy issue. For example, he stressed that the country’s state-owned companies must have control over the energy sector and the production of hydrocarbons and their derivatives, whereas at present there are many foreign private companies operating in these areas. The activities of such companies is often non-trasparent.
