Mercosur denies Zelensky a speech at the summit in Paraguay

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has been denied a speech at the summit of the South American trade organization Mercosur, Paraguayan Deputy Foreign Minister Raúl Cano said at a press conference on July 20.

“Mercosur makes its decisions based on consensus, and there was no consensus regarding this speech [of the Ukrainian president to the participants of the summit – Rossa Primavera News Agency],” the diplomat said. Kiev has already been informed that there are no conditions for a dialogue between Mercosur and Zelenskyy, he added.

The summit is taking place in the capital city of Paraguay, Asunción, 20-21 July. Members Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay are meeting for the first time since 2019.

Mercosur is South America’s largest trade and economic organization.

On July 6, Zelensky held talks with the leader of Paraguay. One of the topics on the agenda was Zelensky’s speech to Mercosur participants about the Russian special operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine.
