Expert: One has to find another solution for Kaliningrad blockade

10.07.2022, Moscow.

If NATO together with the European Union created a casus belli, the issue of connection with the Kaliningrad region would not be limited to capturing the Suwałki corridor, and therefore it is better to use economic pressure, political scientist, head of the Political Science and Sociology Department of Plekhanov Russian Economic University, expert of the association of military political scientists Andrey Koshkin said in his comment for Rossa Primavera News Agency on July 10.

“From the military point of view, we are not going to capture the Suwałki corridor that would have connected Kaliningrad region with Belarus, or the Gap as they say. It is not efficient because on the right and on the left there would be formed strike groups of the enemy,” Koshkin noted.

According to him, in the case of military confrontation, the issue of unblocking of еру Kaliningrad region will have to be solved differently.

“If NATO and the European Union created a casus belli, one would have to solve the issue of the Kaliningrad region’s blockade,” said the expert of the Association of Military Political Scientists. Koshkin thinks that in this case the resolution of this issue will not be limited to capturing the Suwałki corridor.

According to him, Russia has enough economic levers for the leadership of the European Union and, in particular, Lithuania, to bring them to their senses.

“As for the European Union, we want to make it clear that we don’t need a war, but we won’t give up our Kaliningrad region,” Koshkin concluded.

On June 17, Lithuanian Railways announced that starting from June 18 Lithuania prohibits the transit of sanctioned goods to and from the Kaliningrad region.

On November 11, 2002, in Brussels a joint statement of the Russian Federation and European Union on transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the territory of the Russian Federation was adopted.

It stipulated the principles of transit of goods and citizens between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of Russia through the territory of the Baltic States, which joined the EU. These principles were violated with the beginning of the economic blockade of the Kaliningrad region.
