The mopping-up of the Mariupol port from the Ukrainian militants has been completed, head of the Russian Defense Ministry’s Department of Information and Mass Communications Igor Konashenkov said during a daily briefing on April 13.

The Russian Defense Ministry official said that the Mariupol seaport had been completely liberated from Ukrainian armed units and, in particular, fighters of the Azov battalion (organization banned in Russia). Konashenkov stressed that civilians in the port had been released.

“All hostages held by the Nazis on the ships in the port, including foreigners, have been released,” Konashenkov said.

He also added that the remaining militants in Mariupol are blocked and have no opportunity to leave the encirclement.

During the special military operation, the military of the DPR and the Russian Armed Forces encountered fierce resistance in Mariupol. The Ukrainian army and national battalions refused to surrender and stayed in the city, using houses with civilians as cover. At the same time, the evacuation of civilians by the Ukrainian side was not carried out and was often sabotaged.
