Russian Deputy Prime Minister admits the possibility of shutting Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline down

07.03.2022, Moscow.

Russia has the right to stop the flow of natural gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline as a mirror measure to the ban on Nord Stream 2, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak told reporters on March 7.

“We understand that due to the unfounded accusations against Russia regarding the energy crisis in Europe and the imposition of a ban on Nord Stream – 2, we have every right to take a ‘mirror’ decision and impose an embargo on the flow of gas through the pipeline Nord Stream – 1, which today is loaded at the maximum level of 100%,” Novak said.

According to him, Russia is not taking such a decision because no one will benefit from it. Nevertheless, the Deputy Prime Minister stressed that with their statements politicians in the EU are pushing Moscow to take such a step.

Earlier, the company-operator of the pipeline “Nord Stream – 2” announced its bankruptcy. On March 2, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that technically the infrastructure is ready and its launch would bring economic benefits, but the “hysterical reality” prevents this.
