The Communist Party (SACP) of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) has backed Russia and Vladimir Putin in the fight “against US imperialism,” The Citizen reported on February 25.
SACP First Deputy Secretary General Solly Mapaila said that Putin stands against “the big players in the US and the European Union who are bullying the whole world.”
Mapaila said Russia’s condemnation was groundless because the US and its allies have sponsored wars in Syria, the Middle East and other parts of the world unpunished.
He said that Russia opposes US imperialism and that is a reason to rejoice, rather then an invasion into Ukraine.
“Although the impression is given that Russia is the aggressor, in this case the aggressor is the US imperialism, which has aggressively tried to surround Russia. Russia must defend itself,” Mapaila told to the Newzroom Afrika.
The SACP leader stressed that the EU and NATO violated peace agreements signed after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Putin defends Russian Federation against Western attempts to “finish it off,” especially given Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky intends to join NATO.
“Now NATO is surrounding Russia to finish it off. NATO has never disintegrated, it exists and continues to be an aggressive force,” Mapaila said.
“We completely understand Russia. It’s the same as, for example, allowing the US to come in and build up its military power in Lesotho,” Mapaila said.
