Expert: Sanctions against Russian electronics will push Russia towards China

22.02.2022, Moscow.

Western sanctions against the Russian microelectronics industry will create conditions for strengthening technological ties between Russia and China, director of Russian computer equipment manufacturer Promobit LLC Maksim Koposov said in a commentary to Rossa Primavera News Agency.

On February 22, the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the Japanese authorities began to coordinate economic sanctions against Russia, which were prepared in case of “Russian invasion of Ukraine.” The justification for the action was the recognition of the independence of the DPR and LPR.

In particular, Japan is considering restrictions on exports to Russia of high-tech products – microchips, robotics, artificial intelligence technologies. Representatives of other countries also made statements about plans to impose sanctions on high-tech and related products.

“In the medium term, sanctions will reduce the dependence of Russian manufacturers on Japanese technology and technology of Western countries, as well as create conditions for strengthening economic and technological ties between Russia and China,” said the head of Promobit.

It is practically impossible to completely block the supply of chips aimed at the global market. Their supplies will continue through unofficial channels, through third countries, and as part of the finished products of third countries, Koposov believes.

The imposition of sanctions against Russia will undermine confidence in Japanese and Western chipmakers from different countries. This will become an additional factor of regionalization of the global market of semiconductor products, he added.
