The North Atlantic Alliance’s actions claimed millions of lives, but its leadership does not care, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on her Telegram channel on November 19.
In response to a statement of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who called on Russia to de-escalate tensions, Zakharova wrote, “I would like to remind the NATO Secretary General that in recent history, it has been NATO countries that have been the source of aggression that has claimed millions of lives. Militarism and imperialism of NATO have led to dozens of armed conflicts, destruction of states, the plight of civilians and millions of refugees.”
At the same time, she noted, the leadership of the alliance does not intend to bear responsibility for its crimes.
Zakharova called Stoltenberg’s calls for transparency absurd. “If he ‘observes’ all this, then the actions are transparent; and if they are not transparent, then there would be nothing to observe,” she noted.
In addition, NATO countries themselves act in a way that is not transparent to each other. For example, the creation of an alliance between the United States, Britain and Australia and the latter’s plans to build up its submarine fleet came as a surprise to the other members of the North Atlantic Alliance, the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stressed.
Stoltenberg earlier expressed concern about the “concentration of Russian troops” on the Ukrainian border and called on Russia to be “transparent”.
