Kurginyan: Russia’s response to US challenge must be a “super-ideology”

23.06.2021, Moscow.

A discussion about ideology is necessary if Russia wants to be a global power, philosopher, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time social and political movement Sergey Kurginyan said on June 17 on the Evening with Vladimir Solovyov program on the Russia One channel.

The talk show discussed the outcome of the summit of the Russian and the US presidents, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, that took place on June 16, 2021, at the Villa La Grange in Geneva.

The political scientist recalled Biden’s statement at the summit that democracy is part of the US “DNA.” Conversely, Russia is being offered to remain only within its national interests. Kurginyan believes that, from an absolutely pragmatic point of view, Russia cannot focus on its national interests only.

“For example, in response we could say that our super-ideology is our love for Beethoven’s music, which allows us to operate in a certain manner in Africa or Latin America,” Kurginyan explained.

The political scientist believes that ideology is what makes it possible to defend a country’s interests in remote regions of the globe, and this is the difference between a superpower and a powerful regional state.

“A superpower cannot exist without ideology; it cannot stay within its national interests. Because otherwise it is unclear what its national interests are,” Kurginyan noted.

The philosopher indicated that in response to Biden’s phrase about democracy in Americans’ DNA Russia could say that its DNA contains the “The Heroic Symphony.” A focus on national interests vs. an ideological attitude on the international level is an approach that is doomed to fail.

According to Kurginyan, the statement that if the USA and Russia have different national interests then they are not enemies is absolutely wrong. If the US’ national interest now is to destroy Russia, which is allegedly its existential enemy, then Russia is the US’ enemy in any event.

“I cannot understand why a disagreement between national interests and a state of antagonism would be contradictory,” the political scientist stressed.

The first meeting between the presidents of Russia and the USA, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, took place on June 16 in Geneva. The talks, including a break, lasted 4.5 hours.

After the talks, Putin said that the USA and Russia came to an agreement for the appropriate authorities of the two countries to cooperate on strategic stability issues. The sides also adopted a joint statement on the prevention of nuclear war.
