Turkey builds a military base in Syria

27.04.2021, Idlib.

The Turkish army built a military base in close proximity to the contact line in Idlib, a Rossa Primavera News Agency’s source in Syria informed on April 27.

The new military base is located in southwestern Idlib in Al-Ziyadiyah village. “The constructed Turkish base is important because of its strategic position in the region, as well as its proximity to the contact line with the Syrian army forces,” the source explained.

According to him, 300 soldiers of the Turkish army and heavy equipment, including tanks and artillery the base will be deployed in the military base.

On April 26, the Turkish military carried out an inspection of the base accompanied by fighters of the so-called Syrian National Army (SNA). Before that, a convoy with engineering and logistical equipment arrived at the Turkish base.

Idlib in Syria is the last de-escalation zone on Syrian territory. It is controlled by Turkey with the support of pro-Turkish militant gangs. A ceasefire has been in force in the region since March 6, 2020.

Background

At the beginning of 2020 the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) achieved serious success in liberating the territory of Idlib province from the militants. The actions of Assad’s troops caused an extremely harsh reaction from Turkey, which supports the militants.

Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan threatened Syria with a military operation in Idlib. In confirmation of his words, the Turkish army began in February 2020 to intensively redeploy troops in Idlib and set up new observation posts in the path of the Syrian soldiers, preventing the SAA from advancing further.

The Turkish army rapidly redeployed several hundred pieces of armored equipment in Idlib, including Leopard 2A4 tanks, T-155 Fırtına self-propelled howitzer, T-122 Sakarya multiple launch rocket systems, and several thousand soldiers.

Although a temporarily ceasefire has been established in Idlib since Erdoğan’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on March 5, Turkey continues to conduct convoys to support its forces in Idlib and its observation posts.
