Ukrainian authorities outline the first step towards the seizure of Crimea from Russia

26.02.2021, Kiev.

The Crimean platform will be the first step towards the return of Crimea to Ukraine. The head of the Ukrainian presidential office Andrey Yermak wrote this on his Facebook page on February 26.

The Crimean platform is a new international format promoted by the Ukrainian authorities, with the help of which Kiev plans to achieve the seizure of the territory of Crimea from Russia.

“This platform will be the first important step on Crimea’s way home. It will unite the efforts of our diplomats with international partners,” Yermak stressed.

He added that Ukraine will find ways to return the Crimea and will not allow to remove the issue from the international agenda. Yermak also expressed confidence that these plans of the Ukrainian authorities were supported by “the entire civilized world.”

On February 26, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced the signing of a decree on measures aimed at “de-occupation and reintegration of the peninsula of Crimea.” In particular, these measures will include the development and support of the language and culture of the Crimean Tatars, as well as the protection of the rights of the population of “annexed Crimea.” Zelensky also said that he had instructed the government to organize and launch a “Crimean platform.”

Earlier, US Secretary of State Anton Blinken said that the United States supported the creation of the “Crimean platform” and hoped for continued cooperation with Kiev to end Russia’s “occupation” of Crimea.

Crimea reunited with Russia after a coup d’etat in Ukraine. A referendum on the status of the peninsula was held on March 16, 2014. At the referendum, 95.6% of Sevastopol residents and 96.77% of Crimea residents supported reunification with Russia. However, the Ukrainian authorities continue to claim that Crimea belongs Ukraine and keep talking about the “Russian occupation” of the peninsula.
