Opinion: The US air strike in Syria aims at pushing Russia out

26.02.2021, Moscow.

The US air strike in Syria is an effort to push Russia out of the Middle East, Rossa Primavera News Agency‘s political science expert Lev Korovin expressed his opinion on February 26.

The US military action in Syria cannot be viewed “as a thing in itself”: “This has been undertaken both for the reasons of internal US politics and in accordance to the common sense of the waning US hegemony,” noted the expert.

The new US President Joe Biden and the forces behind him offer very little positive policy agenda to the US public opinion, believes the expert.

As it turns out, their promises in regards to the social benefits, including the previously promised support payments to the population, will remain only promises in the near future, which leads to the disappointment of many voters who supported the current US president,” points out Lev Korovin.

According to the expert, if you remove all promises from the Biden’s speech, it turns out that he says only one thing – he is not Trump.

The Democrats, according to Lev Korovin, strongly criticized the former US president Donald Trump for his allegedly unreasonably soft position in regards to the threats to national security, for not putting more pressure on Russia and its allies in Syria.

With new airstrikes, Biden is attempting to show his willingness to be tough when defending the US positions in the regional hotspots, which, according to his PR specialists, should cause a surge of enthusiasm towards him among neoconservative supporters of former president Bush and liberal interventionists from president Clinton’s base,” noted the expert.

According to the expert, Biden’s and Harris’ arrival to the White House means a course towards renewed confrontation with Russia.

“Therefore, this airstrike will not be a single action, but must be the beginning of the systematic US effort that aims to push Russia out of Syria and beyond. They are still afraid to strike the Russian military directly, but the damage inflicted on both the Syrian Arab Army and the armed groups associated with Iran inevitably leads to the strengthening of Damascus government’s opponents, and therefore to the weakening of Moscow’s positions,” concluded Lev Korovin.

On February 25, the US Air Force struck a military facility in Syria. After that, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said that the US leadership was confident that the air strike was carried out against the Shiite group, which, according to Lloyd, had earlier made sorties in Iraq, including those against US interests. He noted that Iraq provided intelligence information and research used to verify the targets.
