Belarus can repeat Ukraine’s fate if Aleksandr Lukashenko shows weakness like his Ukrainian colleague, Viktor Yanukovich, did. The leader of the Essence of Time social political movement Sergey Kurginyan expressed this opinion at an online broadcast on the SolovyovLive YouTube channel on August 11.
According to the political scientist, the protest movement that emerged after the elections is being reinforced with activists from outside the country, because the system has suddenly turned out to be less secure than expected. Therefore, whether or not Lukashenko will show indecisiveness is a matter of concern.
“We all understand that if Yanukovich had followed the usual, normal procedures recognized in Europe and wherever else, and if he had remained firm on his position, the terrible disaster Ukraine has been suffering for many years would never have happened. All this blood and these victims would never have happened, and everything would have been fine,” Kurginyan reminded.
The question is, “whether Lukashenko is a Yanukovich or not. We know, actually, that he is not a Yanukovich, that he has certain achievements in Belarus,” the Essence of Time leader said.
Over the first two days of the protests in Belarus, about 5 thousand people were detained.
