Kurginyan: Lukashenko has gone too far, mistakenly trying to make a deal with the West

Lukashenko has done many bad things while balancing between Russia, the West and Ukraine, but he is still more on the Russian side than his opponents, said the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on August 11 in a special Solovyov LIVE broadcast on YouTube channel, dedicated to events in Belarus.

The leader of the Essence of Time movement is convinced that Lukashenko can win in the confrontation with the pro-Western opposition only by becoming an “anti-Yanukovich.” And former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich, among his other mistakes, tried to reach an agreement with the West. Now Lukashenko is doing the same.

“Yes, he [Lukashenko]is behaving badly. He went too far. My intuition tells me that he is still trying to reach an agreement with the West somehow. Which is absolutely hopeless. For a long time, he has… I known these stories… Lord Bell… there are many things one can say about Lukashenko… And could one say nothing about Yanukovich? No, there was a lot there, too. But that is not what we are talking about now. The fact is that now it is our task to make him win – no questions here. But we are not in charge here, only he himself can do this,” said Kurginyan.

According to Kurginyan, Russia has to support Lukashenko, despite the fact that there are many things in his behavior that cannot be condoned. But the street riots in Minsk are organized to oust Lukashenko from power and lead to a pro-Western coup in Belarus. And this, in turn, will lead to Russia being cut off from Kaliningrad, and then riots will be organized there.

“Lukashenko has been doing many things lately that can’t be condoned in any way. He has been trying to balance between us and the West, Ukraine, to play the role of the middleman. But still, he is more on our side than those whom we see; he is more serious, he is more human than what we see,” stressed the leader of the Essence of Time movement.

Explaining the reason for this balancing by Lukashenko, Kurginyan pointed to the fate of “pieces cut from the empire,” that can’t take the side of the West completely and have to balance. In his opinion, such a position is always weak and can’t be improved by anything but by “returning to the imperial format.”

In Kurginyan’s opinion, Lukashenko should appeal to his own electorate, mobilize the majority that voted for him and hold the real rallies of his supporters in the streets. In this case, law enforcement will be convinced that they are protecting citizens by confronting the protesters.
