“My Comrade Song”, 1973

“My Comrade Song” (from movie “How the Steel Was Tempered”, 1973)

The movie itself is based upon the book written by Nikolai Ostrovsky: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikolai…
The book tells the story of heroic members of Komsomol. What makes it even more powerful is that it is largely autobiographical. He was writing it blind and bedridden but not broken by his terminal illness. There is a museum bearing his name in Moscow, in the building where he lived for a while. It is called “Overcoming”: http://museumpreod.ru/index_eng.html

Lyrics — Robert Rozhdestvenskij

I left my home behind and I don’t know

When I’ll be able to go back and see it.

I’ll only ask you to be with me always,

My comrade Rightness, my comrade Rightness!

I’ll only ask you to be with me always,

My comrade Rightness!

Ostalsja dom za dymkoju stepnoju,

Ne skoro ja k nemu vernus’ obratno.

Ty tol’ko bud’, pozhalujsta, so mnoju,

Tovarishch Pravda, tovarishch Pravda!

Ty tol’ko bud’, pozhalujsta, so mnoju,

Tovarishch Pravda!

I’ll manage, I will never break my vow,

I’ll keep the Earth warm with my own breathing.

Give me your order — I will make you proud,

My comrade Time, my comrade Time!

Give me your order — I will make you proud,

My comrade Time!

Ja vsjo smogu, ja kljatvy ne narushu.

Svoim dykhan’em Zemlju obogreju.

Ty tol’ko prikazhi — i ja ne strushu,

Tovarishch Vremja, tovarishch Vremja!

Ty tol’ko prikazhi — i ja ne strushu,

Tovarishch Vremja!

I once again wake up whenever call comes,

And battle is fierce, and bullets chase each other.

So I can only ask you to keep beating,

My comrade Heart, my comrade Heart!

So I can only ask you to keep beating,

My comrade Heart!

Ja snova podnimajus’ po trevoge,

I snova v boj, takoj, chto puljam tesno.

Ty tol’ko ne vzorvis’ na poldoroge,

Tovarishch Serdtse, tovarishch Serdtse!

Ty tol’ko ne vzorvis’ na poldoroge,

Tovarishch Serdtse!

Gunsmoke covers noons and covers midnights.

I want to clear them up from this grey tempest.

Just, please, remember it, remember all fights,

My comrade Memory, my comrade Memory!

Just, please, remember it, remember all fights,

My comrade Memory!

V bol’shom dymu i polnochi i poldni,

A ja khochu ot dyma ikh izbavit’.

Ty tol’ko vsjo, pozhalujsta, zapomni,

Tovarishch Pamjat’, tovarishch Pamjat’!

Ty tol’ko vsjo, pozhalujsta, zapomni,

Tovarishch Pamjat’!
