Dark Moldovan Maiden (1940)

A while ago a subscriber asked if we only did songs about war or love songs, too.
Well, this one is both.
It is very popular and the movie itself can be called a musical. It is definitely worth watching as it has a great plot and some fantastic Russian and Ukrainian songs.

“Dark Moldovan Maiden” (1940)
(from the movie “Only Old Men Are Going to Battle”, 1973)

Lyrics — Jakov Shvedov
Music — Anatolij Novikov
Translation — Olga Yurchenko

Once at dawn in summer I happened
To my neighbour’s orchard go
Where a dark Moldovan maiden
Gathering grapes was singing low.
I went red, went white like death and
Had a strange and sudden urge
To ask if she wanted
With me all new dawns to watch.
Kak-to letom na rassvete
Zagljanul v sosednij sad,
Tam smugljanka-moldavanka
Sobiraet vinograd.
Ja krasneju, ja bledneju,
Zakhotelos’ vdrug skazat’ —
Stanem nad rekoju
Zor’ki letnie vstrechat’.

Curly, locky, my green maple with carven leaves
I’m enamored and I’m shy because of this
My green maple, curly maple
Locky maple with carven leaves.

Raskudrjavyj kljon zeljonyj, list reznoj,
Ja vljubljonnyj i smushchjonnyj pred toboj,
Kljon zeljonyj da kljon kudrjavyj,
Da raskudrjavyj reznoj.

In return this swarthy maiden
Had a good word for the lad:
“The Moldovans are creating
A guerilla unit now.
They have left first thing this morning,
Went away into the woods.
You will have to follow
Their road through thick trees.”
A smugljanka-moldavanka
Otvechala parnju v lad —
Partizanskij moldavanskij
Sobiraem my otrjad.
Nynche rano partizany
Dom pokinuli rodnoj,
Zhdjot tebja doroga
K partizanam v les gustoj.

Curly, locky, my green maple with carven leaves
At the maple we will say our farewells.
My green maple, curly maple
Locky maple with carven leaves.

Raskudrjavyj, kljon zeljonyj, list reznoj,
Zdes’ u kljona my rasstanemsja s toboj.
Kljon zeljonyj da kljon kudrjavyj,
Da raskudrjavyj reznoj.

With those words the swarthy maiden
Went away into the woods.
I felt slighted that she never
Said, “Join me and follow suit.”
But at night her face was there
In my every thought, it seemed.
Suddenly, I met her
In my unit, like a dream.
I smugljanka-moldavanka
Po tropinke v les ushla,
V tom obidu ja uvidel,
Chto s soboj ne pozvala.
O smugljanke-moldavanke
Chasto dumal po nocham,
Vdrug svoju smugljanku
Ja v otrjade povstrechal.

Curly, locky, my green maple with carven leaves
I’m so happy, my dear lad, to meet like this.
My green maple, curly maple
Locky maple with carven leaves.

Raskudrjavyj kljon zeljonyj, list reznoj,
Zdravstvuj, paren’, moj khoroshij, moj rodnoj.
Kljon zeljonyj da kljon kudrjavyj,
Da raskudrjavyj reznoj.
