World Health Organization: Our partners informed on chemical attack in Douma

12.04.2018, Geneva.

The World Health Organization (WHO) does not confirm any “chemical event”, as the WHO press-service responded to the Rossa Primavera News Agency’s request.

“WHO has not confirmed that a chemical event has taken place in Douma”, the press-service in Geneva informs in response to a letter forwarded from the WHO Health Cluster in Syria asking to comment on the April 11th WHO’s statement. 500 injured persons exhibiting symptoms of chemical poisoning in the city of Douma were mentioned in the statement.

“We received reports from our health partners of the suspected use of toxic chemicals in Douma on Saturday, 7 April”, the WHO press-service continues.

On April 11, the WHO circulated the information on 500 people affected by the chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma. At the same time, the official representative of the organization stated that the WHO did not have the evidence that the incident had taken place, and that the organization has no representatives in Syria. The information was received from the healthcare partners based, according to TASS, in the Turkish town of Gaziantep 500 km away from Douma.

However, according to the today’s message, the informant partners appeared to be closer to the place of incident.

“The information comes from partners that support health facilities in besieged areas. WHO has worked with these partners for a long time and takes their reports seriously”, wrote the WHO press-service.

On April 11, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation said that the statement on 500 injured persons is false, as it had been disproved by the information from the Red Crescent working in Douma. The General Staff also invited the WHO to this town to investigate the matter on site, promising to ensure security.

“The odious White Helmets acting solely within the ranks of terrorists once again staged a ‘chemical attack’ against the citizens of Douma in front of the cameras”, the General Staff’s statement reads.

On April 7, SANA Syrian Arab News Agency reported on the upcoming provocation.
