Germany wants to make a deal with Russia, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki warned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy, the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna business daily wrote on October 2.
Morawiecki warned Zelenskiy against thinking that Ukraine might have a close alliance with Germany. The Germans will always have a desire to reach an agreement with Russia, despite the position of the Central European countries.
Morawiecki reminded Zelenskiy that Poland hosted most of the Ukrainian refugees and had always tried to help Ukraine. Germany, he said, had only sent five thousand helmets to Kiev in the beginning of the conflict.
Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary imposed restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural imports in April. At the same time, they urged the European Commission to use legally binding mechanisms to reduce the inflow of Ukrainian products. Agricultural producers in these countries are suffering as a result of the increase in this flow.
The European Commission decided to impose an embargo on supplies of wheat, corn, rapeseed, and sunflower seeds from Ukraine. In response, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary lifted their restrictions.
The European Commission embargo was in effect until June 5 and then extended until September 15. The European Commission refused to extend it further. Then Hungary, Slovakia and Poland unilaterally renewed the bans.
Ukraine said that it intended to file a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization and challenge this decision of its neighbors.
A scandal broke out between Ukraine and Poland. Warsaw said that it would stop supplying arms to Kiev because it needed them for itself.
