The Soviet Union and Yugoslavia were built according to an imperial formula, with an assumption that at the core of the nation there are people playing a nation-forming role, the Russian people in the case of the USSR, and the Serbian people in the case of Yugoslavia, philosopher, political scientist, and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan stated on September 18 during the Conversation with a Sage program on the Zvezda radio.
Kurginyan noted that the Yugoslav statesman Josip Broz Tito was a genius who built a multinational state. And, according to the political scientist, “he built it the way it needed to be built, by closely emulating the Soviet Union.”
In this context, Kurginyan suggested examining the methodology underlying the construction of both the Soviet Union by Stalin and Yugoslavia by Tito. He emphasized that “this formula is well reflected in the lyrics of the national anthem by Sergey Mikhalkov:
An unbreakable union of free republics,
Great Rus’ has sealed forever.
He explained that the core of such an imperial formula is people who play a nation-forming role, just as the Sun sits at the center of a planetary system. The Russian people (or Great Rus’) formed the core of the imperial system known as the “Soviet Union,” while Serbia (or the Serbian people) formed the core of Yugoslavia, regardless of the ethnic background of Stalin or Tito themselves.
“When Stalin’s formula, or Tito’s formula, started to fall apart, one has to understand: this is not a question of who loves the monarchy, the Tsar, or anyone else more; it is not a question of whether we were conservatives or non-conservatives. This is a matter of system architecture,” the political scientist noted.
He clarified that in the case of the Soviet Union, the issue was not merely in a planned economy versus a market economy, but specifically in the people who played a nation-forming role, as well as the system architecture. According to him, the nation-forming people must be placed at the core of social structure; otherwise, everything collapses.
“Once the Russian people are gone, what kind of empire remains? Who would hold it together? Who? Armenians? Jews? Udmurts? I respect everyone, but only the Russians can hold it together. If Turkic peoples were to try to pull the blanket over to their side, it would mean genocide for the Russians, regardless of any complimentary rhetoric,” said the leader of the Essence of Time movement.
At the same time, Kurginyan noted that to maintain its position at the core, the nation-forming people must be powerful enough to act like the Sun at the center of a planetary system. He emphasized that “Serbia was the Sun of Yugoslavia.”
The political scientist further explained that when the goal is to destroy an empire, the strategy involves “striking the periphery, inciting it against the core, while simultaneously striking the core itself.”
