Why does Nvidia itself join the AI “gold rush”?

26.08.2026, Washington.

Nvidia, which has mage huge profit thanks to enormous demand for its chips in the race to develop artificial intelligence, has decided not only to sell “shovels” to participants in the AI “gold rush,” but also to enter the race alongside the leaders, in other words, to get down into the “mine,” Rossa Primavera News Agency‘s IT Desk  notes.

On August 22, The Wall Street Journal reported that Nvidia had reached an agreement with the startup Poolside. The chipmaker will invest $6 billion in the development of advanced AI models with open weights. Such models are transparent and available for download and installation on personal “hardware.” They can also be fine-tuned for specific tasks.

Nvidia will now simultaneously be a chip supplier to OpenAI and Anthropic, the creators of the closed ChatGPT and Claude models, and a competitor to them. If the new neural network is available for free download and comparable in quality to leading products, businesses will have no reason to pay for AI services. Especially since using bots running on someone else’s equipment carries the risk of sensitive information being compromised.

But why has Nvidia stopped being satisfied with its role as the main beneficiary of the AI boom and decided to enter a race that is not yet profitable for anyone? Presumably, the company is betting on the future popularity of corporate and personal neural networks. In such a world, demand for Nvidia chips will soar even higher.
