The government of Donald Tusk is making attempts to calm the anti-Ukrainian wave raised by President Karol Nawrocki, but without a consensus between the right-wing conservatives and liberals on the Ukrainian issue, it will not be possible to calm this wave, Rossa Primavera News Agency‘s Europe Desk notes.
Recently, representatives of the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs officially stated that the Polish police will actively monitor, identify, and suppress manifestations of hostility and anti-Ukrainian statements both on the internet and in public spaces. This was the authorities’ response to the growing wave of ethnically motivated excesses involving Ukrainians. Attempts to curb the growth of anti-Ukrainian sentiments in society look absurd against the backdrop of the harsh rhetoric of the political elite of the right-wing camp.
Dissatisfaction with Ukrainian refugees in Polish society had been accumulating for a long time against the backdrop of disputes over social benefits, conditions of stay, as well as the behavior of Ukrainians, which sharply contradicts the image of “victims of aggression.” The trigger was a sharp change in the official discourse of Warsaw, namely President Karol Nawrocki’s initiative to revoke the Order of the White Eagle from Vladimir Zelensky in response to yet another glorification of the Banderites.
The topic of the Volhynia massacre once again rapidly burst into the public sphere, inevitably causing deep-seated bitterness in Polish society. The rhetoric shifted from “unconditional friendship and support for Ukraine” to “ingratitude and glorification of the murderers of Poles,” and this removed the barrier for the aggression that had accumulated in society.
Under these conditions, attempts by the police to “bring the process under control” through monitoring online publications only cause bewilderment. A double standard is being formed: high-ranking politicians are allowed to set a harsh anti-Ukrainian vector, while ordinary citizens are required to observe political correctness and silently endure the accumulated problems.
The declared control over xenophobia by the pro-Ukrainian liberal government of Donald Tusk is unlikely to help calm the anti-Ukrainian wave. These measures are being taken to reduce the tension with Kiev. However, in conditions where the right-wing conservative camp continues to actively use the anti-Ukrainian card, and the topic itself corresponds to a real public demand, these measures will only worsen the political positions of the Civic Coalition.
