Between 41 and 43 million people attended the mourning ceremonies for Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, killed in the US-Israeli strike. The Iranian news agency Fars wrote on July 10, citing data obtained from various official sources and field research.
According to the agency, this makes the farewell ceremonies the largest funeral procession in world history.
According to Fars’ estimates, at least 10 million people attended the mourning ceremonies in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala alone, a figure confirmed by representatives of the Office of the Prime Minister of Iraq.
For the field research, the agency used data on the number of public transportation passengers traveling to the mourning events, as well as the number of active mobile phones in mosques and on the streets where the processions took place.
“The agency also counted those who attended the processions in more than one city,” the Fars wrote. The mourning ceremonies began in Iran on July 3, and on July 4, coffins containing the bodies of the ayatollah and four of his relatives, who were killed alongside him, were placed at the large religious complex of Mosalla of Tehran in Tehran.
The funeral procession in the capital took place on July 6, after which the body was taken to the Shiite holy city of Qom and then to Najaf and Karbala in Iraq, where ceremonies were held at the principal Shiite shrines. The farewell ceremonies concluded with the burial at the mausoleum of Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad on July 9.
Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 in an airstrike on his residence during a US-Israeli military operation against Iran. Following the death of the Supreme Leader, power in the country passed to his 56-year-old son, Mojtaba Khamenei.
