Arguments about how much harm entertaining video platforms bring to our children are still ongoing, but a new problem arose, the one of a growing amount of content generated by the so-called artificial intelligence (AI), so we are facing a risk of getting a generation raised on absurd material, the IT editorial office of the Rossa Primavera News Agency notes.
On June 21, a research of TikTok content by the Kapwing US-based video editing platform was published. It showed that 59% of videos offered to new users are made using AI: they use unrealistic visual effects, generated voice, and illogical videos.
However, it is even worse with video for children: under the #CartoonKids hashtag, 97% of videos contain AI garbage. For the #cartoons and #babysong hashtags it amounts to 83%, for #forkids it is 79%. Among those, educational videos containing errors are offered to children.
According to Kapwing, on YouTube any neuronic garbage is recommended three times less often. One can suspect that the US-based company seeks to present the US-based video hosting better than the Chinese one. But is it too little when one fifth of the videos offered is AI garbage?
An adult will immediately understand that something senseless is taking place in a video, but a child lacks necessary experience. He does not know how the anatomy of a character must look like and he cannot distinguish a natural voice from a synthesized one. He can take senseless videos for a norm but not a deviation.
Those who consume the digital insanity adopt, instead of a cultural code, a mutation that lacks any internal consistency. Considering the fact that many parents prefer “educating” videos instead of learning together with their children, after 10-15 years we can get a generation for whom classical children’s literature and educational programs will be alien because their primary “teachers” and “educators” were AI-generated videos.
Parents should think whether it is safe to leave their children alone with digital platforms. If you feel unsafe when you leave your child with a stranger why do not you feel so with a machine having no responsibility?
