The authorities of the Baltic States seek to decrease the outflow of their population as they fear that the eastern borders of the EU can be unprotected, although previously they removed people from the frontier regions to build a “defense line,” the Baltic Office of the Rossa Primavera News Agency reports.
Prime Minister of Latvia Andris Kulbergs recently said that the European Union must allocate funds for schools and hospitals because the Baltic States urgently need to stop the outflow of their population. The Baltic regions is Europe’s eastern outpost, but many of their people are leaving their country because its economy and social policy has long been ineffective.
“We need schools as well as healthcare and housing. The problem is that we cannot afford letting people leave these regions for geopolitical reasons,” Kulbergs told journalists in Brussels.
However, quite recently people living in the regions along the border with Russia and Belarus were removed en mass from their land in order to use these territories to construct a defense line, military training areas for NATO exercises etc.
Also, a long-term Russophobic hysteria of the Baltic authorities has a negative effect, and people in the frontier areas began to leave their homes for quieter life, often choosing to go to another country, not another region. Often it is Russia, because those who live in the frontier areas are mainly Russian-speaking people including many ethnic Russians and mixed families.
Now the authorities have changed their policy. The eastern territories must not become absolutely deserted, otherwise there will be no one to fight for them. This is why they now seek EU funds while their own budget is spent for “defense” according to NATO standards.
This is very convenient as the funds will be received and used in any event. The corrupt authorities will find a way to spend them even if there is no one to build schools and hospitals for.
