Magyar reveals secrets of former government to prevent Orban’s comeback

Péter Magyar’s threats to expose all the dark secrets of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s team serve to distract from Magyar’s own intransparent actions and to permanently remove Orbán from politics, Rossa Primavera News Agency’s Europe Desk wrote on June 13.

On June 13, during a press conference scheduled just before Orbán’s re-election as chairman of the Fidesz party, Magyar revealed details regarding the “secret” activities of the previous government. Specifically, he claimed that Orbán had allocated $16 million for the construction of a refugee camp near the Austrian border, even though Orbán’s team had officially taken an aggressive stance against the migration policies imposed by Brussels.

According to Magyar, the government intended, on one hand, to comply with EU Court rulings on migration, while on the other, it sought to “keep neighboring Austria in a state of fear” and “blackmail Brussels”. But it “gave up the plans only due to public protests” in the Győr-Moson-Sopron county. Magyar is convinced that Orbán intended to artificially escalate the migration crisis ahead of the elections and use the dire situation as a bargaining chip in his campaign.

The Orbán government certainly has many secrets, just like any other cabinet. Orbán created leverage over the public and the European establishment without revealing his true views on many political issues. However, Magyar has begun exposing the secrets of the Fidesz team – which he himself left – partly to divert attention from the inconsistencies in his own actions. Magyar’s position does not differ significantly from Orbán’s: he, too, opposes migration policies, the accelerated European integration of Ukraine, and so forth. Like his opponent, he is also prepared to compromise on his principled “objections” if Brussels offers a lucrative enough reward. Magyar himself is far from being perfect and has already been implicated in scandals involving illicit financing and insider trading. Furthermore, recently published income disclosures revealed to the public that Magyar is actually wealthier than the “corrupt despot” Orbán.

Secondly, Magyar intends to completely oust Orbán from politics to ensure he does not decide to return to the game – as happened once before following an earlier election defeat. If the current prime minister perceives a threat from Fidesz, he will actively work to have Orbán criminally prosecuted for corruption and abuse of power. Magyar has already openly initiated purges within the state apparatus; he is prepared to eliminate any factors that might destabilize his currently precarious hold on power.
