Little Slovakia and big India: Why the countries need each other

18.06.2026, Bratislava.

Slovakia and India have elevated the status of their relations to a comprehensive partnership. Thus, Slovakia hopes to enter the rapidly growing Asian market, while India aims to gain a partner for developing high-tech industries and strategically expand its ties in Europe, Rossa Primavera News Agency‘s Europe Desk notes.

Diplomatic relations between India and Slovakia were established back in 1993, immediately after the formation of the Slovak Republic. However, on June 15, 2026, an event occurred that marked a new stage in relations between these countries – the first-ever state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Slovakia.

During this historic event, a decision was made to elevate the status of bilateral relations between India and Slovakia to the level of comprehensive partnership. As part of this step, 11 agreements were signed, covering a wide range of areas, including defense, nuclear energy, digital technologies, the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, higher education, labor migration, and others. The leaders of the two countries also agreed to make efforts for the earliest possible entry into force of the free trade agreement between India and the European Union.

The deepening of cooperation opens up new opportunities for both countries. India is a giant market with growing domestic demand. For Slovakia, growing exports to India and attracting Indian investments mean new jobs and the development of high-tech sectors. Slovakia has companies with competencies in the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, and modern technologies – they can become technological partners for Indian companies.

In addition, by cooperating with India, Slovakia as a whole strengthens its position as an important logistics and industrial hub in Central Europe.

Bratislava also has a political interest. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated at a joint press conference with Narendra Modi on June 15 that India should have permanent membership in the UN Security Council, expressing support for Delhi’s sovereign policy. By supporting India in the UN and other international organizations, Slovakia gains an ally on the world stage.

On the other hand, for India, Slovakia is a “gateway” to Central Europe. By strengthening ties with it, India gains access to the economic and political networks of the entire region, including such associations as the Visegrád Group (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary). This allows India to expand its European ties beyond just large states like France or Germany.

Also, in Slovakia, India gains a partner in the defense industry, nuclear energy, and automotive manufacturing. Furthermore, it can leverage Slovakia’s scientific potential by cooperating with it in the fields of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and quantum technologies.

Thus, the cooperation between Slovakia and India is not merely a tribute to friendship, but a pragmatic alliance where Slovakia finds a huge market for its technologies, while India gains a partner for developing modern industries and expands its strategic European ties.
