Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is simultaneously trying to build closer ties to US conservatives while remaining acceptable to Russia, political scientist, philosopher, and leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on the Conversation with a Sage program on the Zvezda radio station.
According to him, Orban decided to repeat the path of Tito, following the principle that “a gentle calf suckles from two cows.”
“In addition, it turned out that his somewhat provincial nationalist style is very appealing to US conservatives, who themselves are not far from that… Of course, he says exactly what they are used to hearing: Christianity, to hell with migrants, Hungarian identity,” the political scientist added.
Kurginyan noted that both Donald Trump and J.D. Vance consider Orban their closest ally. At the same time, US conservatives dislike the modern Europe and dream of bringing to power in every European country “politicians like Orban.”
“Then this Orban, through his small-scale actions, also becomes a card in the hands of Vance and Trump,” the political scientist emphasized.
With regard to Ukraine, Orban behaves in a way that keeps him sufficiently acceptable to Russia while preserving access to cheap energy resources. At the same time, he pursues Hungary’s national interests, since a significant number of Hungarians live in Ukraine, Kurginyan noted. For these reasons, he blocks “Zelensky’s initiatives,” including EU financial aid to Ukraine.
“And at the same time, he [Orban – Rossa Primavera News Agency] wants to build alliance with Trump and Vance – and they, too, are playing some kind of complex game with Russia. He suddenly turns into a political figure,” Kurginyan explained.
The political scientist also drew attention to what he described as a new “gangster-style rhetoric” from Zelensky, who, according to him, not only finances the Hungarian opposition party Tisza but also directly threatens Hungary’s prime minister.
“The question is not only how he finances these elections… The issue is that before Zelensky, no one had ever said that they would eliminate an unwanted president of a European country. That is the real innovation! To say live on air – not somewhere in a hidden underground situation room, but openly: ‘I will give his address and phone numbers to my buddies from Ukraine, to the gang, and they will pay him a visit, and he won’t like it.’ This is new language. It is essentially the standard of criminal jargon that had generally been banned,” emphasized the leader of the Essence of Time movement.
