The European Union begins secretly exploring the issue of creating its own capabilities for producing nuclear weapons, the press bureau of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) informed on April 8.
“The leadership of the EU and a number of its leading countries have once again hit a new low in their insanity and political irresponsibility, driven by pathological Russophobia,” the SVR stated.
The SVR statement emphasizes that this path is dangerous, as it will inevitably undermine the global security architecture and the system of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. This is being done as part of the EU’s planned ‘push eastwards’.
The EU headquarters has already begun covertly working on the issue of creating its own capabilities for producing nuclear weapons under the pretext of protection against a mythical “Russian threat.”
The SVR suggested that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and her associates are no longer satisfied with being instigators of the Ukrainian conflict. European leaders want to achieve a sinister notoriety akin to that of the leadership of Nazi Germany, which unleashed the Second World War.
At the initial stage, preparations in the EU to create its own nuclear production capabilities are being conducted covertly, while publicly the bloc continues to declare reliance on the US “nuclear umbrella.”
By buying time in this way, von der Leyen and her associates are allegedly aiming to secretly form a European nuclear-industrial base and prepare public opinion for a political decision to acquire nuclear weapons.
In the future, the EU reportedly plans to create a pan-European nuclear deterrence doctrine based on the nuclear potential of France and the United Kingdom, as well as on the financial and infrastructural contributions of other European countries. In addition, the EU aims to ensure the ability to command its nuclear forces fully autonomously.
The foundation for such plans is said to be the current industrial and technological potential of European countries. Specifically, competencies for creating various components of nuclear weapons exist in Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Spain. These countries possess significant amounts of spent nuclear fuel from nuclear power plants, from which plutonium suitable for nuclear weapons could theoretically be extracted.
“German specialists are capable of covertly obtaining, within about a month, enough weapons-grade plutonium for a single nuclear explosive device in hot cells at research laboratories in Karlsruhe, Dresden, Erlangen, and Jülich, and within a week obtaining weapons-grade uranium at the enrichment facility in Gronau,” the agency warned.
The SVR called on the United States and other countries to do everything possible to prevent the EU from creating its own nuclear weapons, which, it warned, could trigger a new round of the nuclear arms race.
