A representative of Iran’s Foreign Ministry reported that between 150 and 160 people may have been killed when a missile struck a girls’ primary school in southern Iran. Iran has unofficially closed the Strait of Hormuz. Israeli and Iranian strikes continue…
On February 28, the United States attacked Iran simultaneously from the air and the sea. A large number of fighter jets were involved in the operation, and US Navy also launched Tomahawk missiles from their ships.
Strikes were carried out against targets on land and along the coast. The port of Asaluyeh was hit, where the export center for gas from the South Pars field and a major industrial cluster are located. The port of Chabahar was also struck — a transit hub to Central Asia, China, and Afghanistan. It is also home to a naval base of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Imam Ali base, which belongs to the IRGC Navy.
At the same time, a US official and a source informed about the US-Israeli operation told The Wall Street Journal that Israeli strikes on Iran are primarily aimed at the country’s leadership.
NBC News, citing a high-ranking Middle Eastern diplomat familiar with the course of recent contacts, reported that it was Israel that intervened and disrupted negotiations on the nuclear issue between the United States and Iran. According to the source, the talks were close to success, but Israel intervened to prevent diplomatic action.
Israel struck hundreds of Iranian military targets, including missile launchers in western Iran. The military continues to strike “a wide range of targets,” the Israeli army’s press service noted. Satellite images of the destroyed residence of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in Tehran appeared in the morning. According to sources, Khamenei was not there. The Iranian leader had been moved to a safe location in advance.
However, in the evening, Tehran City Council member Meysam Mozaffar reported the deaths of the Supreme Leader’s son-in-law and daughter-in-law, according to the Jamaran agency. There has been no other confirmation of this information, nor has there yet been any denial. Khamenei’s daughter-in-law is the wife of his son Mojtaba — Zahra Haddad Adel; the son-in-law is Mojtaba Al-Hoda Bagheri Kani. Whether there were children with them is not yet known.
Israel’s Channel 9 reported that 30 bombs were dropped on the complex where Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was allegedly hiding. In contrast, the Lebanese channel Al Mayadeen reported that Ali Khamenei is alive and is at an operational headquarters directing military actions.
About 200 Israeli fighter jets took part in the raid on Iran’s defense system. They dropped hundreds of munitions on approximately 500 targets, including air defense systems and missile launchers in various regions of Iran. Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Ministry of Defense were also hit.
US military bases in the Persian Gulf were attacked by the IRGC. The targets of the missile strikes were Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, Al Dhafra Air Base in the UAE, as well as the base of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet. Satellite images show the destruction of a forward U.S. radar at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar by Iranian ballistic missiles.
Explosions were also heard in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. One person was killed in the UAE capital as a result of falling debris. An explosion was also reported in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, according to Agence France-Presse.
A photograph showing a huge column of smoke after a strike on a US base in Bahrain somewhat marred the demonstration of US success.
The IRGC also struck an auxiliary US Navy vessel equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles, according to the Iranian agency Mehr.
More than 170 Iranian missiles were launched at Israeli territory since the morning.
The IRGC also announced a ban on any vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz, which may indicate its blockade, Reuters reports. Iran has not officially confirmed such an order.
The Red Crescent press service reported that 201 people were killed in Iran and 747 were injured. One of the most horrific tragedies of the first day of the war was the attack on a girls’ school in the Iranian city of Minab. Local authorities reported dozens of schoolgirls killed. With each passing hour, the death toll increased.
By evening, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei reported that between 150 and 160 people may have been killed when a missile struck a girls’ primary school in southern Iran. Iranian rescuers are still pulling the bodies of killed children from under the rubble of the school.
