Political scientist: Confrontation between the US and the EU over Greenland is beneficial for Russia

20.01.2026, Moscow.

The confusion in US domestic politics and tension in relations with the European Union, caused by US President Donald Trump’s attempt to take control of Greenland, is creating contradictions in the West that will, for some time, reduce pressure on Russia, said political scientist and American studies expert Rafael Ordukhanyan on January 18 in a conversation with a correspondent of Rossa Primavera News Agency.

According to the political scientist, Donald Trump’s actions regarding Greenland have created a split within NATO, something that US neoconservatives are absolutely not interested in.

“If you listen to Ted Cruz, if you listen to senators like Kennedy and some others who represent this neocon agenda, there is, of course, a small but nevertheless real panic about this. Moreover, a group of senators, including US Republicans, have now gone to Europe to calm these ‘jumps’ a bit and to express their loyalty to NATO ideals. So there is a certain confusion there, and I think to a very large extent this is an indicator of Trump’s internal confrontation with his opponents within the United States,” Rafael Ordukhanyan noted.

In his opinion, the United States is approaching a choice between Greenland and NATO, a possibility that Trump mentioned on January 8 in an interview with The New York Times.

“But this is an element of confrontation within the United States itself. For Russia, this is beneficial. Russia should, without losing time, resolve its domestic issues. And as they say, no one said it better than Shakespeare, ‘A plague o’ both your houses!.’ If they annex Greenland, that will be bad — a split in NATO. If they do not annex it, the contradictions will remain,” the expert said.

He emphasized that for the United States, any development of the situation will be a losing one.

“And for us, everything is fine here. Let it happen, let it happen more often. We need precisely such chaotic situations. As many as possible, so that they have them there. Because the more they quarrel among themselves, the less attention they pay to us and the less they meddle in our affairs,” the political scientist believes.

At the same time, Ordukhanyan pointed out that a sign of reduced chaos would be statements on the Greenland situation by US Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who have not yet expressed their positions.

It should be noted that earlier US President Donald Trump stated that 10% import tariffs would be imposed on a number of EU countries (Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland), as well as on the United Kingdom and Norway, as measures related to the situation around Greenland.

On January 15, at Denmark’s request, two-day training Arctic Resilience began in Greenland with the participation of military personnel from Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden. Initially, it was planned that the exercises would take place without US participation, but on January 17 Denmark invited US troops as well.

On the same day, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke stated that it had not been possible to persuade the United States to abandon the idea of annexing Greenland. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken sharply about his desire to gain control over Greenland in the interests of national security.
