Seizure of Kurdish territories in Syria by Damascus will lead to an escalation in the Caucasus

19.01.2026, Damascus.

The surrender of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in battles with the Syrian army and pro-Turkish groups resulted in Syrian Islamists gaining control of prisons housing Islamic State (ISIL) radicals (organization banned in Russia) and camps housing their family members, according to the the Rossa Primavera News Agency’s Middle East Desk .

Prior to this, SDF fighters guarded and controlled these camps and prisons themselves and were extremely interested in ensuring that ISIL (organization banned in Russia) terrorists were not released.

On January 18, following the so-called peace agreement between the SDF and Damascus, control of ISIL (organization banned in Russia) prisons and camps in Syria was transferred to the new Syrian authorities. Some experts have already reported that the Syrian army has begun releasing prisoners from “liberated” camps.

The new Syrian government and its supporter, Turkey, have acquired tens of thousands of ISIL (organization banned in Russia) prisoners.

There is a very high risk that some of these militants will be deployed to fight the enemies of Syria and Turkey and to gain ideological control over ever-increasing territories.

Therefore, Russia could face the prospect of hundreds of terrorists moving to neighboring territories, which would exacerbate the situation in the Caucasus. There is also a risk of militants moving to the Central Asian republics.
