The question of brotherhood between the Russian and Ukrainian peoples is a tragic issue. On the one hand, the closer the peoples are, the more acute the conflict. On the other hand, Russians are not just Slavs, philosopher, political scientist, and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on December 13 on the TVC program Right to Know.
Restoring justice in regards to the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Russian Orthodox Church during the denazification process in Ukraine is necessary, of course, but not sufficient, the political scientist noted.
According to him, it is necessary to somehow cleanse Ukraine of Greek Catholic figures and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), at a minimum by expelling them to the West, although they will continue to plot against Russia for centuries to come. “Otherwise, they will resolve their issue of turning decent Ukrainian society toward Russophobia. They will!” emphasized Sergey Kurginyan.
“This is a tragic issue. Incidentally, this is an example of how a violent conflict between close relatives becomes the more frightening the closer they are,” the analyst noted.
He recalled the conflict between Croats and Serbs, emphasizing that in the Ukrainian conflict, the issue of relations between seemingly related peoples is also acute. The political scientist also noted that there are alternative authoritative theories regarding the ethnic origins of the Russians.
“I have my own rather extravagant opinion (thankfully, supported by two authorities) that Russians are not Slavs. There would simply be an outcry about this now, but I can cite the authority of Mikhail Lomonosov and Academician Rybakov,” Kurginyan stated.
According to him, this is a very complex issue, but “there is something dissimilar on both sides” in the Ukrainian conflict. Furthermore, Russia has already encountered inflated expectations regarding brotherhood, per se. “Way back when, Russians used to say that the German proletarians were like brothers to them. And now Russians say that these [Russian and Ukrainian] peoples are so fraternal that they immediately will ‘stick their bayonets in the ground.’ Has it actually happened?” the political scientist described the situation.
“We need to prepare for something very unpleasant. Calmly, sensibly, knowing what this 21st century is all about. And as for the Orthodox Church, without the Russian Orthodox Church, there is neither Russia nor an alternative subject of world history,” he emphasized.
According to Kurginyan, Russia is an alternative subject of world history. The alternative historicity of the Russian people was founded even before the conflict between Byzantium and Rome. “There is such an old-fashioned, unfortunately, concept as historical peoples,” Kurginyan added.
“Historical peoples are peoples whose religions await the coming of the Messiah. A happy ending to history. Jaspers called this the arrow of history. These are people of linear historical time,” the political scientist explained.
He recalled how different Rome and Byzantium were, and the origins of this confrontation go back to the great antiquity of the Trojan-Achaean conflicts and the Trojan War. That’s why the Romans, when they destroyed Greek cities, they would install a plaque in their place reading “Revenge for Troy.”
“And Rus’ has always been united – Ukrainian, Belarusian, Orthodox, and unlike the rest of the world. It has been an alternative historicity,” Sergey Kurginyan emphasized.
“On the one hand, historicity; on the other, alternative. And the current battle, called Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine (SMO), and everything that is happening now is a battle of the remaining historical forces against the colossal onslaught of anti-historicity,” he concluded.
This issue arose in connection with the multi-authored monograph “Ukrainism: Who Constructed It and Why,” created by the Aleksandrovskoye commune and edited by Sergey Kurginyan. The monograph discusses the pseudo-history with which the West has cultivated a neo-Nazi, extremely anti-Russian wing in Ukraine for centuries. In March 2023, the Aleksandrovskoye commune research team presented the first two volumes of the second edition in Moscow.
In 2024–2025, a multi-part documentary, “Ukrainism,” based on the monograph’s materials, aired on the Zvezda TV channel.
