Denmark is part of the so-called “coalition of the willing” and is prepared to send its military personnel to Ukraine, but it is unlikely to be capable of defending its lawful territory – the island of Greenland – from a possible annexation by the United States, Rossa Primavera News Agency Europe Desk wrote.
Denmark is actively supporting Ukraine, spending up to 3% of its GDP on it. The country belongs to the so-called “coalition of the willing” and plans to send its troops to Ukraine after a peaceful settlement of the conflict. Denmark is also one of the main sponsors of the Kiev regime; since early 2022 it has provided Kyiv with military assistance worth $10 billion.
At the same time, when it comes to US claims on Greenland, Denmark can only express concern and invoke the UN Charter, since it is hardly capable of actually defending its territory. Especially given that a US military base has long existed in Greenland.
“This is absolutely touching: with Greenland five minutes away from annexation, to want to send troops to Ukraine. There are still kind people left in the world. Yes, it is absolutely touching,” Russian analyst Aleksandr Nosovich remarks ironically.
While Denmark is “successfully” helping Ukraine, the largest part of its territory and the world’s largest island is about to be occupied by a foreign country that simultaneously deprives Denmark of its status as an Arctic power.
Brussels is also unable to oppose the United States in this situation and only makes a helpless gesture. Europeans can only hope that the US will abandon its claims and that “the problem will disappear,” but with every new statement by US officials regarding Greenland, this hope fades further.
After Venezuela, Europe simply does not know what to expect from the United States. Financial Times quoted a European official, who said that the Americans do not need to annex Greenland. They can already get everything they want anyway. And that is what makes the situation so uncertain.
US military actions to seize Greenland could lead to a direct conflict within NATO, so the US administration will most likely continue to look for ways to reach an agreement with Denmark and the island’s authorities. In any case, little Denmark “holds no trump cards,” and in the end it will have no choice but to bury its pride and submit to US demands.
