Colombia has called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting regarding US aggression in Venezuela, as reported by Angie Rodríguez, Director of the Administrative Department of the Office of the President of Colombia, according to a statement from the President’s Office on social network X on January 4.
The meeting will take place on Monday, January 5. “A request has also been made for an emergency meeting of the Permanent Council of the OAS and a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of CELAC, in which Colombia holds the presidency,” she stated during a press conference following a meeting of Colombia’s Security Council in the city of Cúcuta.
The United States committed an act of armed aggression against Venezuela on January 2-3, 2026, striking targets in Caracas and the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira, during which they captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The order was given by President Donald Trump, citing the fight against drug trafficking and the need to regain control over oil resources.
According to Venezuelan authorities, dozens of people were killed, including civilians and military personnel. The strikes hit civilian and military targets, including the Fort Tiuna complex near Caracas.
Russia has condemned the US act of armed aggression and supported the request for a UN Security Council meeting.
