Kurginyan: Small countries cannot be sovereign

08.12.2025, Moscow.

Small countries may dream of sovereignty, but they will be forced to choose whose sphere of influence to enter, political scientist, philosopher, and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on November 14 on the Conversation with a Sage program on the Zvezda radio channel.

“To everyone who talks about sovereignty: ‘I want sovereignty’; I can respond by quoting my closest friend’s mother: ‘Keep wanting’,” the political scientist stated.

Commenting on Armenia’s desire for sovereignty, Sergey Kurginyan recalled that the Armenians “were massacred alternately the Turks and the Persians.” Then, when Russians came into the region, Armenia became part of the Russian Empire, and then the Soviet Union, which established two academies of sciences there, the political scientist noted.

Now, Armenia has abandoned the advantages it gained in the USSR and, instead, is busy setting up dolma production facilities, Sergey Kurginyan figuratively described the country’s situation, questioning the kind of sovereignty Armenia desires this time and who it is willing to accept as the one who will massacre its people.

The political scientist emphasized that small countries may talk about sovereignty as much as they want. However, in his opinion, in reality something completely different will take place, “supepowers willing to pay for this dominance and possessing the capabilities to do so – will dominate.”

Actually, small countries can only choose which sphere of influence to enter. If a country doesn’t want to fall into Russia’s sphere of influence and receive all the benefits of such influence, but rather wants to “decolonize itself by destroying its aircraft production,” this means it will become a colony in a different way.

Speaking of another type of colonial dependence, Sergey Kurginyan suggested to examine the Chinese model as an example. “Of course, China is a very humanistically minded superpower; it will, of course, treat Kazakhstan very well; it will, of course, elevate and develop it,” he noted with some irony.

The expert emphasized that the cold look of Chinese geopoliticians is actually saying, “Territory – that’s good, resources – that’s good too, population – who needs it? These are superfluous people; we have our own.”

According to him, this doesn’t mean assessing China as good or bad, but rather reflects the reality.

Meanwhile, commenting on the official visit of leaders of Central Asian states to US President Donald Trump, during which they were praising the US leader, the political scientist noted, “When they say, ‘Master, master, good, good, very good, wonderful, brilliant, God-sent,’ they realize that this is the master.”

Sergey Kurginyan emphasized that such a master will not give anything, but will only take away. While former US President Joe Biden might have offered handouts while mumbling something about human rights, members of Trump’s team “will not ramble on about human rights; they will simply rob,” the political scientist stressed.
