Kurginyan: Russia needs a population of 300 million to be sovereign

28.11.2025, St. Petersburg.

In the future, only centers of power with populations of at least 300 million people will possess sovereignty, political scientist and leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on November 19 at the plenary session of the 20th International Congress “Health as the Basis of Human Potential: Problems and Solutions,” held in St. Petersburg from November 18 to 22.

Kurginyan emphasized that at present, China possesses true sovereignty. Small countries, by definition, cannot be sovereign. They can only join other centers of power. Therefore, when the Baltic states demanded “independence” from the USSR, this merely meant that they wanted to move from one power center to another.

“Of course, the Baltic peoples will be absolutely sovereign under the aegis of the Teutonic Order, which will explain to them how much sovereignty they will have. And it already does,” Kurginyan stated.

“The problems of sovereignty for small states are, to me, deeply speculative,” the analyst noted.

The philosopher explained that throughout their history, Armenians “could choose who would massacre them” — the Persians or the Turks. The only alternative to this scenario was moving into Russia’s sphere of influence.

In this sense, Armenia may desire sovereignty, but it cannot obtain it simply because it is a small country. The political scientist recalled how, in his childhood, the mother of a friend, who was raising him alone and lived very modestly, responded when the boy said he wanted a bicycle. “Mom used to say: ‘Keep wanting’,” Kurginyan said. When Armenia declares its wish for sovereignty, the only possible answer is “keep wanting,” he added.

“Sovereignty is state power capable of defending itself and desiring that self-defense,” the analyst defined.

Kurginyan noted that sovereignty requires not only nuclear weapons and autarky, a system of national self-sufficiency, but also a certain population number.

“The fact is, the future belongs to of power with no fewer than 300 million people,” the political scientist explained. He stressed that the process develops toward such consolidation in the future, and all smaller entities may forget about sovereignty.

“Sovereignty is the privilege of the few, and it is an expensive luxury,” Kurginyan said.
