The escalation around Venezuela initiated by the US is due to the growing influence of China in Latin America along with insufficient Russia’s support of Venezuela, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, philosopher and political scientist Sergey Kurginyan said on October 3 on the Conversation with a Sage program on Radio Zvezda.
Discussing US navy’s major military maneuvers near the shores of Venezuela, the political scientist noted that these moves of the US authorities are due to, in particular, the growing influence of China in Latin America. He reminded that China actively obtained economic positions in South-Eastern Asia, then in Africa, and this had to raise concerns in the US.
“What they (China – Rossa Primavera News Agency) are doing in Africa, I mean the triumph of Chinese money, is astonishing,” Sergey Kurginyan stressed.
The analyst noted that the Chinese intelligence plays certain role in this process. Although its performance, in his opinion, should not be overestimated, the combination of Chinese economic, political, and security services actions looks “triumphal.”
At the same time, the Chinese authorities want to spread their economic influence not only to Africa, but to Latin America as well. As a result, the United States “found itself attacked from inside across its Latin American underbelly,” Kurginyan noted.
In this context, according to him, we should welcome Russia’s friendly relations with and supplies to Venezuela. “However, in my point of view, what we supply to them is not sufficient, because we have not decided whether we love Trump or not,” the political scientist added.
He noted that, according to recent statements by some people close to Kremlin, “the spirit of Anchorage” is alive, i.e. there is hope that the meeting of the presidents of the Russian Federation and the US in Alaska will normalize the relations between the two countries. However, other people close to the Kremlin say that the momentum taken in Anchorage has exhausted. If the former is true, Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Prize looks reasonable, while supporting Venezuela does not. If the latter is true, supporting Venezuela looks reasonable but nominating Trump for the Nobel Prize does not.
As a result, Russia moderately helps Venezuela, although it could do much more, e.g. supply Russian-made air defense systems. Especially after Trump spoke about supplying long-range Tomahawk missiles to Kiev.
“As a very authoritative (and this is no irony) member of our political elite says, we cannot distinguish whether a flying Tomahawk is nuclear or conventional, they do not differ, so we will have to strike back just in case it is nuclear, according to respective paragraph of our doctrine… So where are we?” Kurginyan described the uncertainty of the current situation.
