British fake news that Zaporozhye NPP may become a second “Fukushima”. How the information war is waged

02.10.2025, Moscow.

The article by the British Guardian about an allegedly possible repetition of the Fukushima nuclear disaster at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (ZNPP) under Russia’s control is another act of information warfare against Russia, Rossa Primavera News Agency‘s Economic Desk wrote.

On September 27, The Guardian published an article claiming there was a risk of a catastrophe similar to the one at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in 2011. The publication claims that the generators producing energy for the cooling pumps could allegedly stop at the plant, which would lead to overheating of the reactor core and a disaster.

In its article, the newspaper referred to statements from high-ranking but anonymous Kiev officials and Greenpeace (organization designated as undesirable in Russia) experts, who directly accused the Russian side, and to the IAEA, which vaguely reported a dangerous situation at the plant.

The Guardian begins with something that actually happened: indeed, on September 23, the last power line supplying electricity to the ZNPP was destroyed, and the plant switched to generators. However, everything else stated in the article is a lie.

First and foremost, there is no risk of a repeat of the Fukushima scenario, not even close. The plant has a sufficient fuel reserve, and unlike the Japanese nuclear power plant, where the generators were in one room and were flooded by a single tsunami wave, at the ZNPP they are located in different rooms. Even the failure of one of the generators will not lead to catastrophic consequences.

The absence of risk was confirmed in a statement by the plant’s management. The silence of the IAEA also serves as confirmation. If a real threat were looming over the plant, the agency would be obliged to warn about it, however, its specialists stationed at the plant do not report anything of this kind.

The second big lie in The Guardian‘s publication is the accusation against Russia for creating a dangerous situation, which is based solely on Kiev’s assertion that the Ukrainian army “never fires at or around the plant” because it is “unacceptably risky.”

At the same time, the newspaper says nothing about the fact that shelling of the ZNPP is absolutely not in Russia’s interests. In February 2022, it gained control of a fully operational nuclear plant, and it was precisely because of the shelling that it was forced to stop its operation in September of the same year.

Moreover, each new shelling and interruption in power supply complicates the situation and forces Moscow to spend more and more effort on stabilizing the situation at the plant.
