Kurginyan: Bolshevism keeps nuggets of saving experience for Russia’s future

23.09.2025, Aleksandrovskoye.

Elite genesis, elite responsibility, plus supreme intellectualism are the components determining Russia’s genuine place in the future, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, philosopher and political scientist Sergey Kurginyan writes in his article Responsibility published on August 21 in the Tomorrow (Russian: Zavtra) newspaper.

Kurginyan stresses that the destiny of Russia several times depended on elite genesis, and the latest time it was the Bolsheviks that offered a solution, even if an ambiguous one, which was compatible with the life of the country and its development. Even in the Brezhnev and Andropov period, according to the analyst, the Soviet governing establishment could not completely abandon the problem of new Man, which was the essence of the doctrine of the Bolsheviks in the early USSR.

“Elite responsibility plus supreme intellectualism. Did all that exist in the USSR? Indeed, supreme intellectualism, without which no actual constructive elite responsibility can take place, was on the margins of the mainstream political process. But at least there it could maintain its existence! From there, it spread some kind of intellectual waves, which sometimes reached even the decision making centers,” Sergey Kurginyan reminded.

With all the ambiguity of the Soviet imperial superpower intellectualism, its only advantage was that it existed, and it believed it was a necessary part of the imperial and superpower kind of being, i.e. of everything that just has to be involved in the formation of mega-trends, Kurginyan stresses.

“Why did it happen this way in the USSR? Because the USSR definitely was a peculiar kind of an empire without colonialism, and it was a superpower. The latter is most important. The fact that there was absolutely no colonial suppression in this empire, which was a superpower, was obvious to everyone except some idiots and psychopaths. <…>

Seemingly, in the current situation, which is more dangerous than even before, we should seek any nuggets of saving experience, whether you like it or not. But no. ‘The plague of Bolshevism… Russia that we lost…’” We would not have lost it if the Tsarist imperial elite had had at least minimal efficiency! Is this simple idea so hard to comprehend?” the analyst writes.

Kurginyan stresses that today a new responsibility of elites becomes relevant, which is “rooted in very complicated and very passionate substances” (which combine a metaphysical, existential tension) and a new intellectualism, without which we can neither go beyond the framework of “deadly secondariness” caused by the project of our integration into the Western civilization nor unfold the concept of a new Man, i.e. the concept of Man’s reserved capabilities.

“Without this you will have to choose between Antichrist, Armageddon, and artificial intelligence,” Kurginyan stresses.

Russia today, the analyst writes, must become “a master of the game,” because “they are the only ones who win.” He notes that empires and superpowers “form mega-trends.” And they move in parallel in a competition for a place in the mega-trends that they form. As for the others, they have to compete for a place without any chance to form mega-trends.

“It is clear where Russia’s genuine place is. If it becomes a piece it will be sacrificed, and very quickly. If it attempts to be just a player, not a piece, then it will be sacrificed upon a change of the rules, which can change quite quickly today. Therefore, it can only be among those who establish the rules of the game. Right?” Sergey Kurginyan concluded.
