The words by outstanding Russian critic of the 19th century V.G. Belinsky that Russia lacks even a police kind of an order but it has only huge corporations of thieves on governmental positions are a key to the understanding of what is taking place in Russia today, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, philosopher and political scientist Sergey Kurginyan writes in this article On the Real Threat to the Moscow State published in issue 640 of the Essence of Time newspaper.
Belinsky was a Westernist, although he loved Russia very much and he suffered from what was taking place in it. In his letter to Gogol of 1847 Belinsky writes that Russia “is a horrible scene of a country that lacks not only any guarantees to personality, honor, and property, but it even lacks any police kind of an order, but it has only huge corporations of thieves and robbers on governmental positions.”
Kurginyan indicates that to “huge corporations of thieves and robbers on governmental positions” Belinsky contraposes not liberty as one could expect from him, but “a police kind of an order.” Here, Belinsky exhibits an extraordinary potential for predicting the future, the author writes, because quite soon afterwards these “corporations” led Russia to the defeat in the Crimean War.
“Nine years after he called a police kind of an order a positive alternative to the most dangerous troubles by various municipal officials and other Gogol-style characters inside a range of the corporations of thieves and robbers on governmental positions, Russia lost the Crimean War,” Kurginyan writes.
If the models for Gogol’s The Government Inspector only robbed Russia it would be not so terrible. However, such corporations of thieves on governmental positions were organized in a manner that corrupted the country from inside making it unable to defend against its enemies. Had the Crimean War been won, one could have said that, despite poorly organized life in Russia, it could still defend itself against a deadly enemy. But Russia lost the Crimean War exactly because the “corporations” of thieves on governmental positions failed to ensure its security.
“In Russia, it is extremely difficult to establish a police kind of an order as an alternative to the outrage of the corporations of thieves and robbers on governmental positions. I want to stress that a police kind of an order is exactly an alternative to the outrage of these governmental corporations but not a soil cultivating such an outrage.
A police kind of an order ensures that governmental goals are achieved, defense industry flourishes, and army is both disciplined and governed by reasonable people as well as well equipped, supplied with innovative arms, and spiritually adequate at the same time,” Kurginyan writes.
The author discusses the inability of “huge corporations of thieves and robbers on governmental positions” to ensure victory in the Crimean War, when the entire West united against Russia, in the context of the war in Ukraine.
