Russian President Vladimir Putin’s credit of trust among the people is so huge that he has a wide range for maneuvering within the framework of the conflict in Ukraine, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, political scientist and philosopher Sergey Kurginyan said on August 8 on the program Conversation with a Sage on radio Zvezda.
“Russian president’s credit of trust is so huge that he has a wide range for maneuvering. He can escalate hostilities or de-escalate them, and he can put them on pause for a while. This would not trigger any super-crisis in Russia,” the political scientist stressed.
Along with the understanding that the Russian president can maneuver, we must understand his psychology as well, the analyst added. And this knowledge suggests that Vladimir Putin will not really give in to external pressure.
“He [Putin] cannot do one thing – firstly, due to his psychology (that any person has), and secondly, due to his domestic political situation – he cannot concede under direct pressure. This is what he cannot do. Firstly, he is not that kind of a person. Secondly, he has certain culture in which he was raised in Saint Petersburg and elsewhere, which he discussed in detail himself. Where it is clear that as soon as you give in you are dead. And thirdly, there is a context. This is the only thing they would never forgive him. But they would forgive something else. Anything else can be accounted for somehow,” Sergey Kurginyan explained.
US President Donald Trump does not take this peculiarity of the Russian president into account.
“He [Trump] is closing the window of negotiations allegedly using pressure, i.e. he is doing the only thing that dramatically reduces Putin’s space for maneuvering, small talk, and speculations by any collective Medinsky, Dmitriev etc. All this goes aside, because he says, ‘Get down!’ – ‘Are you crazy? Whom are you talking to?’ – ‘Get down!’ Well, it will not go this way. Does not he [Trump] understand this?” the political scientist noted.
Sergey Kurginyan explained that, although it is not quite clear to him what the interests of United States Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff in this process are, he understands very well Special Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg.
“This is a classical person raised by Brzeziński, a tougher one. Why is he tougher? Because he also has special operations forces in his background. This is the ‘kill Commie for mommy’ kind of a person, where Commie and Russian is absolutely the same. Thus, there are people around him who are well aware that as soon as he says ‘Get down!’ the window will become dramatically narrowed if not closed completely,” the political scientist explained.
