The European Union intends to replace its regional support system with an income-based approach, said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Magyar Nemzet wrote on July 16.
Orbán emphasized that the change in how European farmers are subsidized is a serious issue. According to Magyar Nemzet, leaked documents outlining the EU’s post-2027 agricultural policy state that support for “poor” farmers should be phased out.
“According to this proposal, aid to large agricultural enterprises will be significantly restricted. Support for areas over 450 hectares will essentially be eliminated, and it will begin to decrease substantially starting at around 90 hectares,” journalists wrote.
Orbán announced that in response to the European Commission’s decision, Hungarian farmers plan to hold a demonstration in Budapest on Wednesday. The protest will be organized by the National Chamber of Agriculture and the Association of Hungarian Farmers’ Circles and Cooperatives.
The politician stressed that protests will not be limited to Hungary but will take place across Europe.
