Chinese Foreign Ministry responds to detention of Chinese citizens in Kiev

11.07.2025, Beijing.

Beijing is prepared to defend the legal rights and interests of its citizens detained in Kiev, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated on July 11.

Two Chinese nationals were detained in Kiev: a 24-year-old former student of Kiev Technical University, expelled in 2023 for poor academic performance, and his father, who had regularly traveled to Ukraine. They are suspected of attempting to illegally export missile technology. Beijing is seeking to clarify the circumstances surrounding their detention, Mao Ning said.

“China is currently conducting a review and investigating the situation,” the diplomat noted.

Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, held talks on the Ukraine conflict. “The minister told the EU’s chief diplomat that China cannot afford a Russian defeat in Ukraine, as it fears that the US would then shift its full focus onto Beijing,” the statement reads.
