A ceremonial keel laying of the large landing ship Sergey Kabanov took place at the Yantar Baltic Shipbuilding Plant of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), the USC press service informed on July 8.
The ship is being built for the Russian Armed Forces under the modernization Project 11711 developed by the Nevskoye Design Bureau of USC. It is named in honor of Soviet military commander Lieutenant General Sergey Ivanovich Kabanov, who led military operations with the Baltic, Northern, and Pacific Fleets of the Soviet Navy during the Great Patriotic War. This is the third ship of the modernized design being built at the USC Yantar Baltic Shipbuilding Plant.
Currently, two other large landing ships of the same project – Vasily Trushin and Vladimir Andreev – are under construction at the shipyard. The modernized design features an updated architecture and an enlarged helicopter deck at the stern, capable of accommodating a naval multipurpose or transport-assault helicopter.
These ships are the largest by displacement among those currently being built in modern Russia for the Navy. They are intended for transporting naval infantry and military equipment. The new ship was laid down on the day Yantar Shipyard celebrated its 80th anniversary.
